GCSE Results Day 2026 Checklist

Thursday 20 August 2026 — most schools release results between 8:00am and 10:00am, though this varies.

There is no UCAS system for GCSEs. Your next steps are arranged directly with your school and your chosen sixth form, college or training provider.

Before results day

  • Check how your school is releasing results: in person, by email, text or online portal
  • Check what time your school opens and whether collection is staggered
  • Bring photo ID if your school asks for it
  • Save the phone number of the sixth form, college or provider you plan to join
  • Write down the grades your chosen course requires
  • Think about backup options in case your grades are different from what you expect
  • Arrange for a parent, carer or trusted adult to be available

On results morning

  • Collect your results slip
  • Check your grades against the entry requirements for your next course
  • Speak to teachers or advisers while you are there
  • Confirm your place with your sixth form, college or provider
  • Keep your results slip somewhere safe — you will need it later

If your results are better than expected

You may have more choice than you planned for. Speak to your school or your chosen provider on the day, as some courses have grade-based entry requirements you may now meet, and popular courses can fill quickly.

If your results are lower than expected

Most colleges and sixth forms have advisers available on results day to talk through alternatives, and many offers are more flexible than the published requirements suggest. Speak to your school as soon as you can.

Maths and English

In England, students who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths are generally expected to continue studying those subjects as part of their post-16 education, often through a resit. Your school or college will explain how this works alongside your other courses.

Post-16 routes to consider

  • Sixth form or college — A-Levels or other Level 3 qualifications
  • T Levels — classroom study combined with an industry placement
  • Apprenticeships — paid work combined with training
  • Vocational and applied courses such as BTECs
  • Retaking GCSEs, usually alongside other study

If you think a grade is wrong

Your school can request a review of marking or an appeal through the relevant exam board. There are deadlines, so raise it with them promptly.
